What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?

When spoken and written communication does not meet a person's needs, alternative ways of communicating may be explored. AAC includes tools and strategies, such as picture symbols, that help individuals express their wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings more effectively.

How Do I Use This Communication Board?

Point to the picture on the communication board that matches what you're saying. This shows your child/youth how the board can be used. To learn more watch this video!

The more children see AAC, the more they learn. Here are some more tips:

Use the communication board yourself! Point to the important words on the communication board as you're talking.
Accept all forms of communication. Every message matters!
Respond to any attempts your child/youth makes to communicate.
Talk with your child/youth and point to the relevant words on the board while they are involved in things they like. Don't expect your child/youth to copy but celebrate if they do.
Replace questions and directions with comments.
