The Breaking the ICE (BTI) Canada conference is an event created by & for individuals who use Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) and their families. This conference is the only event of its kind in Canada and was designed to bring the community of people who use AAC together to share ideas, learn from each other, and create new friendships: to “break the ice” so we can meet each other and learn from each other. BTI Canada is a consumer-centered conference designed for augmented communicators that has proven itself to be a powerful force for change and a source of empowerment for people who use AAC. The theme of this 5th Biennial Conference is ‘Embracing Life’ and it will be held at University of Toronto Residence 89 Chestnut Street, Toronto, Ontario from June 3-5, 2011.  Visit the website for registration details.

picture in kilometres for communication.doc.jpg Kerr Wattie is an artist, activist and presenter who speaks with AAC. Kerr knows from personal experience that the misconceptions about people without speech are as harmful as they are rampant. He knows about the lack of funding for communication devices and about the impossibly long waiting lists for AAC services, resulting in his living for years without a voice.  He unfortunately also knows about the exclusion and isolation that result.
This summer, Skye, Kerr’s younger brother, will cycle across Canada to meet with alternative communicators, raise awareness and funds. From May through August, 2011, Skye will cycle from coast to coast, accompanied by Kerr in a bike trailer where possible.
Along the way, Skye and Kerr will conduct a public education, information and awareness campaign. Check out all the plans at their website: http://kilometresforcommunication.com
On May 12 2011, the Augmentative Communication Service will host a special event at TVCC to highlight this wonderful endeavour. Look for details on the TVCC website and in the upcoming editions of the I Can Newsletter
