Why do we use Splints or Casts?
- Splinting provides a long gentle stretch to the muscle or joint to increase movement at the joint
- Splinting provides appropriate positioning for function and ensures stability during activity
Types of Splints and Casts
Lower Extremity Splints
- The cost for splinting is charged to cover the cost of materials only.

- A non-removable plaster and fiberglass cast is applied to provide a long gentle stretch to the muscle or joint, which will increase movement at the joint
- Up to 4 casts may be necessary in order to achieve the desired joint range
- This may be done in combination with Botox treatment
- Each cast is kept on for 14 days
- A commitment of 3-6 weeks is required

- An occupational therapist may recommend a splint to maintain or improve functional position of the wrist and hand
- Upper extremity splints can be custom made or in some cases, purchased from suppliers
