What is Seating "Seating" refers to the supports an individual may need in order to maintain a functional and comfortable sitting posture. These supports can range from something as simple as a firm cushion to a complex system. Complex systems are referred to as inserts, because they are used inside of another piece of equipment - generally referred to as a base. A wide variety of bases can be used, beginning with baby equipment such as infant seats, car seats and high chairs to manual and power wheelchairs for older children and adults. What About Mobility? Mobility bases give individuals alternative means of getting around their environments. A stroller is one type of mobility base for a young child. A manual wheelchair is prescribed as the child grows and a power wheelchair or scooter may provide another means of independent mobility. There are other mobility aids such as walkers and crutches, but these are not prescribed through our Seating and Mobility Service. How Do You Get Started? Upon receipt of a referral and background information, an appointment is made for the client to be seen in seating clinic. We have clinic appointments available each working day. Families and clients can help by bringing all current seating and wheeled mobility equipment. Standing frames and walking aids are not prescribed or assessed at seating clinic. Input from families, therapists, teachers and others is of value in making the most appropriate prescription. Discharge Planning
