As a consumer, you must think of some good questions and do comparative shopping. What is the referral process? Is there a waiting list?
What are the mandatory requirements? What kind of reports do they include in the costs and whom do they send them to? Some examples are: Is the Occupational Therapist (OT) trained in driving assessments? Does the evaluation also include an in-car assessment with both an OT and a qualified driver educator? How do the assessment results relate to safe and functional driving skills? Is the agency conducting the driving assessment and training specialized in the area? Are they approved by the Ministry of Transportation as a provincial driving assessment centre? Are they members of the Association of Driver Educators for the Disabled (ADEP)? What type and how often do they attend continuing education courses in this area? What other professional association are they affiliated with (i.e. National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association, Society of Automotive Engineering, Driving School Association of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapist of Ontario)? Do they work closely with Transport Canada and the Canadian Standards Association? How long has this agency/staff been doing driving assessments? Does the driving assessment agency have a vehicle (car/van) with modifications for trial and assessment? Can the driving assessment agency recommend a dealer who is qualified to make modifications to your vehicle? Is it a lump sum or is the fee structure flexible for individual needs? Ask for a copy of the fee structure. Will the agency assist you in finding resources for potential funding assistance? The fee structure may be divided into assessment, reports, lessons, and driver education classes. Is there a difference between costs of the driving program depending on the funding source? If the driving program is out of town, does the agency have any connections with accommodation options? Are there any aspects of the assessment process or background information that your current Occupational Therapist could provide to the agency to assist in the process and reduce costs? |
