A psychometrist provides psychological services directly to the child and family, as well as by working closely with rehabilitation professionals at the Centre and in the community to meet the child's needs.
Concerns frequently dealt with by psychology staff include :
- school placement, educational programming and integration issues
- parental understanding of cognitive abilities and the relationship to behavior
- difficulties with peers such as feeling lonely, isolated and being teased by others
- typical adolescent issues which may be compounded by a weakening physical condition.
- behavioural and emotional difficulties such as aggression, temper tantrums, fears, anxieties and low self-esteem
- challenges with implementing therapeutic programming
Services provided include :
- assessment of child's learning, social and emotional needs
- consultation with teachers, child care workers, medical staff and other professionals serving the child in his/her own community
- education and support for parents regarding child management techniques
- individual counseling to children and adolescents
- consultation on issues of stress management, problem solving, anger control, impulsivity, communication and dealing with others
- referrals for further assessment and treatment if necessary
