"Gait analysis is the systematic measurement, description, and assessment of quantities that characterize human locomotion; more simply put, it is the evaluation of a subject's walking pattern."
Gage JR, DeLuca PA, Renshaw TS, 1995.
Gait analysis is designed to analyze abnormal or inefficient walking patterns caused by a variety of medical conditions. We evaluate walking ability very precisely in order to:
- Record deviations in walking patterns
- Determine the cause of abnormal or inefficient walking patterns
- Plan future treatment such as surgery, therapy, or bracing
- Evaluate the effects of treatment
- Measure change over time
The team involved in the gait assessment include:
- a biomechanist
- an orthopaedic surgeon
- a physical therapist
