LEARNING SUPPORT SERVICES

What are Learning Support Services at TVCC?

Services are designed to support children and youth with disabilities (age 2 to 19) and their families when:
· Information is needed to understand the impact of a child’s disability on learning;
· Help is needed to plan transition points, school placement and educational programming; and,
· The child is experiencing learning challenges and a specialized assessment may be needed.

The information from the consultation and/or assessment is shared with the client and/or the client’s family, and a plan is developed.  With the consent of the family or youth who is 16 years old or older, the information is shared with others.

What does the Learning Support Services team do?

· Consult with families, other therapists/clinicians or community partners about a  child’s learning capacity;
· Provide consultation, individual counseling, group programs and educational workshops to build on a child’s learning capacity and learning opportunities;
· Complete comprehensive assessments of developmental, intellectual, behavioural, social-emotional and adaptive skills; and,
· Provide diagnostic information to help develop realistic expectations and strategies based on a child’s learning capacity.

How are Learning Support Services requested?

The family discusses their child’s needs with his/her therapist, physician, or teacher. Following this discussion the parent may ask the child’s therapist to complete a referral to Learning Support Services.

Who provides these Services?

Learning Support Services at TVCC are delivered by clinicians called Psychometrists who have graduate training in psychology, child studies and/or education.  They work under the supervision of a registered Clinical Psychologist. Services are provided in accordance with the professional standards, guidelines and the ethical code of conduct of the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
