Check what your current Speech and Language Pathologist or Occupational Therapist can do.
These therapists have skills and strategies regarding basic augmentative communication and can provide valuable assistance in this area. They are familiar with “low technology” devices such as a computer with commercially available programs, adaptive switches, or symbol boards, which may meet your needs. If you currently do not have these services, talk to a TVCC service coordinator about what is available in your area.
Writing
If a regular keyboard is not working for you because of physical limitations, ACS can help you to access the computer so you can write functionally or develop the ability to write.
Face to Face Communication/Conversation
ACS can help explore technology options or specialized strategies if:
- your communication needs have reached a point where you need and can work with more than 20 messages on a communication device or picture communication board and/or
- you are having difficulty accessing your communication system because of physical challenges
Things to consider
- The use of technology for communication may not be suitable for everyone. Before going ahead with an assessment in ACS, you may be asked to try a simple device and see if you are comfortable, and receptive to using technology.
- Families also need to consider their comfort with using and supporting technology for their child’s communication.
- In addition, families need to think about the potential cost and the time commitment they are willing to give to work with the strategies or technologies provided.
How to make a Referral
- A doctor’s signature is not required.
- Already a Client of TVCC? With the help of any therapist you are working with, please fill in our ACS Referral Questionnaire and fax, mail, or deliver it to Nya Jimson, Intake Coordinator at TVCC. This form will help us determine the best way to meet your Augmentative Communication Needs.
- Not Currently Receiving Any TVCC services? Send a referral form to us as instructed on the form as well as the completed ACS Referral Questionnaire.
What will Happen Next
- A service coordinator will contact you and will let you know the referral has been received, and may request more information if needed.
- When your referral is reviewed you will be notified of a plan to assist with your augmentative communication needs.
- Be aware that there is typically a waiting list for ACS assessment and follow up.
