Tips for kids with Spina Bifida

Often youth with spina bifida experience nutrient deficiencies, dental problems or osteoporosis. Some youth may have a Chiari 1 malformation that can affect swallowing and tolerance of food textures. As such, feeding may become difficult due to not being able to swallow or chew food properly. To ensure adequate nutrition, nutrient dense foods high in fiber and especially zinc, ascorbic acid, vitamin B12, and folic acid are recommended. Sufficient fluids should be emphasized to relieve constipation, which may be a problem.

Eat a varied diet with nutrient dense foods; drink 6 to 8 cups of fluid every day including 3 to 4 cups of water. Try to include plenty of fiber in the diet (whole grain breads, cereals, brown rice, whole grain pastas, fruits, vegetables, beans, peas, and lentils, etc.).
