It is important for youth with autism spectrum disorder to try to eat a healthy diet because some may experience health problems that may cause nutrient deficiencies such as thyroid disorders, immunological disorders and gastrointestinal problems (celiac disease). Nutritional defects can result from a pre-existing bowel disorder and also from other bowel problems like constipation, bad eating habits and difficulty choosing a variety of nutritious foods. The caloric requirements for youth with autism seems to be the same as the general population. Following “Eating Well With Canada’s Food Guide” is a good place to start to ensure proper nutrition is followed.
Difficulties may occur involving food selection including communicating food choices or understanding why they don’t like a particular food. Youth with autism can be very sensitive or have a specific reaction to certain stimuli. These youth may like specific textures, flavors, colors, brands and are not very willing to try new things. This makes it difficult to meet nutritional requirements. In some cases, nutritional supplements are needed.
Suggested healthy snacks and meals are ones that have a familiar texture and or taste. Read food labels to find casein-free and gluten-free products. Many grocery stores now carry these specialty products. It is important to incorporate foods from the four food groups to meet all the essential nutrients that the body needs. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Youth with autism need to make sure they meet the daily recommendations of nutrients, as it is difficult to consume new foods with different tastes and textures. To start with the educational process of trying new foods, a multivitamin is encouraged to make sure no deficiencies in any nutrients come about, then to try new foods in small bites with plenty of water to wash food down to prevent choking. Meeting all daily recommendations of minerals and vitamins will ensure sensory issues are to a minimum. This may also reduce food aversions.
