Funding Wheelchairs / Commercial Equipment  E-mail

The Assistive Devices Program(ADP) may fund a portion of the equipment depending on whether you meet their eligibility criteria. The amount funded depends on the type of wheelchair or commercial seating you require. This equipment is prescribed by your therapists at your Seating clinic appointment based on their assessment and the client's needs. The application will be filled in by your therapist at your appt. and mailed to ADP by either yourself or your therapist. It usually takes about 2-3 months to get the approval from ADP.

Clients receiving Social Assistance (i.e., ACSD, ODSP, O.W.) are now eligible for the maximum contribution from ADP for wheelchairs. Note, there may still be an outstanding amount that is not covered by ADP.

What do I do once the ADP application has been sent off?

While waiting to hear from ADP, take your copy of the ADP form with the names of the specific wheelchairs suggested by your therapists to the wheelchair dealer of your choice for a quote. In some cases you will need more than one quote. Check with your funding source to determine how many quotes you require. Make sure the quotes are all for the same equipment with the same features.

Who will pay for the non -ADP portion of the equipment?

You can pay for it either in total or in part if other funding is available. First check to see if insurance is an option

  1. who will pay non ADP portion flowchartInsurance may be an option if your child is covered under extended health benefits through your employer. Policies differ so see if the wheelchair and/or "orthotic devices" are covered. Some will fund only if ADP also covers a portion. Check with your employer or benefits representative.
If insurance is not available other options for funding include:
  2. Easter Seal Society (ESS) can be approached by clients between birth and 18 years of age with physical disabilities who need special equipment. ADP funding is required where appropriate. You may be asked to cover a portion and obtain quotes from 3 equipment vendors. Check with your Regional Easter Seal Office.
  3. March of Dimes can be approached by clients 19 years of age and older. ADP funding is required where appropriate. Ask your seating therapist for an application if needed.
  4. Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada (MDAC) funding is available to those who are registered with MDAC. ADP funding is required where appropriate. Other sources of funding may also be required.
  5. Non-insured Health Benefits funding may be available for First Nations clients. ADP funding is required where appropriate.
  6. Social Services - Special Assistance Dept. funding is sometimes available. ADP funding is required where appropriate. When both commercial equipment and custom seating are prescribed get funding for commercial equipment first. Ask for funding for custom seating later when you receive the approval for the commercial equipment.

What do I do when I receive the ADP approval in the mail?

Your additional funding source may want to see both the yellow and white forms sent to you by ADP in order to complete your funding approval.

Take both the white and yellow forms to the wheelchair dealer to order the equipment. Ask them to deliver it fully assembled to TVCC where it will be checked to ensure the equipment delivered matches the original prescription.

When will I get the equipment?

Your seating therapist will book a fitting appointment once the wheelchair is delivered to TVCC. This is generally about a month later. You should be able to take the equipment home after the fitting appointment.
